Fairmined Gold and Fairmined Ecological Gold: Differences and benefits.

Have you ever heard about Fairmined Gold and Fairmined Ecological Gold? You still do not understand the difference? Here you will find some useful information to clarify your doubts.

Since 2004, the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) supports artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) to promote the sustainable development of mining communities that implement responsible practices. With this objective in mind, ARM embarked on a journey of learning and reflections that several years later resulted in the Fairmined Standard.

The Standard includes requirements for responsible mining organizations, such as:

  • Formal and legal mining operations
  • Environmental protection
  • Good working conditions
  • Traceability of Fairmined minerals
  • Supporting the socio-economic development of the communities through the Fairmined Premium and the Fairmined Ecological Premium.

In addition, the Standard also includes requirements that must be met by the other participants in the responsible supply chain, which are the buyers of the certified metals.

The gold produced under the standard is called Fairmined Gold. Fairmined Ecological Gold is produced under the same strict standard for responsible mining that applies to Fairmined Gold in terms of social, economic and organizational criteria. But there is a difference: Fairmined Gold is produced with responsible handling and the reduction of toxic chemicals such as mercury and cyanide, while Fairmined Ecological Gold is extracted and processed without using any toxic chemical at all within the mining organization. Furthermore the miners need to comply with additional requirements to minimize ecological alterations.

Fairmined Ecological Gold processing

The processing for the production of Fairmined Ecological Gold is characterized by not using any toxic substance for the recovery of gold but implementing gravimetric processes where equipment such as gutters, concentration tables, centrifugal concentrators or pans are used.

Mercury and cyanide

The most common toxic chemicals used in mining are mercury and cyanide. The mercury is mixed with minerals that contain gold, forming a mercury-gold amalgam that is then heated, evaporating the mercury and thus obtaining the gold.

The leaching or extraction of soluble matter from a mixture through the use of cyanide, is when the miners use cyanide to dissolve and separate the gold from the mineral. When done correctly, it is considered a safer alternative to the use of mercury since the toxicity of the substance can be deactivated.

If the cyanide is managed in an irresponsible manner, it can cause immediate damage. Mercury is a more gradual threat to people’s health and to the environment. Mercury is a chemical element that comes from both artificial and natural sources. It is not degradable and accumulates in the environment or in the body.

The responsible use of these chemical products is allowed under the Fairmined Certification (not the Ecological Certification) as long as the legislation of the country allows it. This responsible use includes putting into practice methods of mercury recovery throughout the process, avoiding emissions to the atmosphere, soil and water, the proper disposal of waste and the training of personnel in charge of its management and disposal, as well as the use of protective equipment and appropriate places for the handling of these chemicals. However, the Fairmined Standard stipulates the gradual elimination of the use of these chemicals for the production of gold.

Although not all miners have the possibility of eliminating the use of toxic chemicals due to lack of access to appropriate technologies or geological circumstances, the Fairmined Standard encourages them to appropriate and implement responsible and ecological production chains, offering an additional premium over the gold sales price up to USD 4,000 if they produce Fairmined Gold and USD 6,000 for those mining organizations that commit to Fairmined Ecological Gold production.

Responsible mining organizations can use the Fairmined Premium to make investments in cleaner technologies and other improvements in processing techniques. In addition, the premium also seeks to promote investment for changes in the community and improvements to common work spaces within the organization.

[1] Amalgam: Gold, silver and several other metals and their compounds are capable of alloying with mercury. These alloys are known as amalgams.

361,5kg of Fairmined Gold were sold in 2018

In the course of 2018, Fairmined Gold sales reached a total of 361,5 kg , a record that almost exceed last year’s sales by 100%. This is a great achievement that has been possible thanks to all the people who are part of the responsible gold supply chain. The team of the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) welcomes this success which is a positive development for the Fairmined Initiative, its allies and collaborators.

This achievements also brings us closer to another important milestone: Between 2014 and 2018, 968,10 kg of Fairmined Gold have been sold worldwide, which means that soon we will be able to report the first ton of GOLD TO BE PROUD OF having reached the market.

This reaffirms the commitment of both miners and mining organizations as well as buyers and brands with responsible artisanal and small-scale mining as an active force for good which contributes to an institutional, social and environmentally sustainable development . ARM wants to thank the Fairmined certified mining organizations for their commitment, their work and their willingness to be part of the change. This achievement is also significant for them as they received USD $ 1,459,729 in 2018 through the Fairmined Premium.

Since 2014, a total of USD $ 3,665,928.52 of Fairmined Premium has been paid to certified mining organizations to invest in their sustainable development. Thanks to this premium, mining organizations can improve their productive performance, as well as the conditions of their workers and the community. In this report you can find examples of the use of the Fairmined Premium in 2017. The premium use of 2018 will be published in ARM’s annual report which will be published soon.

At ARM we feel proud and invite you to join us to continue the success story in 2019, which will be full of new challenges, partnerships and even higher goals.

On 7 January 2019, a special meeting took place in Vienna, Austria. People from all over Europe gathered to talk about one of the most exciting topics in the gold sector: Fairmined.

Goldsmiths, jewelers, refiners and suppliers from Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Scotland, Spain and Switzerland followed the invitation by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) and travelled to Vienna to participate in the Fairmined Meeting Europe. As Fairmined Licensees and Authorized Suppliers they actively participate in the Fairmined Initiative by buying and selling Fairmined Gold and producing beautiful products with an added value, such as jewelry or coins.

One of the objectives of this day was to update the participants on the work of the Alliance for Responsible Mining and progress of the Fairmined Program. Conny Havel, Head of Supply Chains and Markets, shared information on sales, market, supply, demand and impact of Fairmined in 2018, as well as giving an update on the 11 Fairmined certified mining organizations and ARM’s work plan 2019 to supportand further grow gold supply chains from responsible artisanal and small-scale mining.

Furthermore, two workshops were held. The first workshop focused on the revision of the Fairmined Standard 2.0, as 2019 will see the development of Fairmined Standard 3.0. Following ISEAL’s international recommendations for Standards Development, sustainability standards should be reviewed at least every five years for continued relevance and for effectiveness in meeting its stated objective. The Fairmined Licensees and Suppliers were invited to reflect on the requirements of the Fairmined Standard 2.0 that apply to them and share their inputs on how to improve version 3.0. Interesting discussions emerged and the participants had the opportunity to reflect on important topics with Felix Hruschka, expert on artisanal and small-scale mining, president of the ARM Board and one of the leader’s in the development of historic, present and future Fairmined Standards. This workshop was part of the initial collection of inputs from specific Fairmined Stakeholders, the public communication of the revision and consultation of the Fairmined Standard 3.0 will start in the coming months.

The second workshop focused on collecting inputs for the Fairmined Market Strategy 2019, according to ARM’s philosophy to shape its works as much as possible to the needs of its partners. The highly motivated group reflected on what their expectations and needs are to be successful with Fairmined, on what works well and what should be improved, on values and customers, amongst others. A special highlight were the values which our partners associate with Fairmined, as they perfectly reflect how its developers want it to be perceived:

The feedback from the participants was extremely positive and ARM thanks all those who travelled to Vienna to contribute and make the meeting a success. One of the greatest pleasures of our work is to engage with these dedicated people who call themselves “Fairmined Family”!

We have the pleasure of sharing with you a new Fairmined Certification in Peru: the Minera Aurífera Cuatro de Enero Sociedad Anónima cooperative (MACDESA), following the example of its precursor CECOMIP, which obtained the Fairmined Certification in 2016.

MACDESA is located in the district of Arequipa, close to the old Centro Poblado menor Cuatro Horas, where mining has always been part of life for the 500 families that make up the community. MACDESA since its inception has provided basic services such as electric lighting, health services, educational support for the children of workers, and partnerships with the local school through the hiring of teachers. Also in 2015, when a fire destroyed the old Centro Cuatro Horas, demolishing about 90% of the homes, MACDESA provided support for those affected by assisting with the relocation, feeding needs and installation of emergency tents.

On the path to the Fairmined Certification, MACDESA significantly improved its production system, its social and environmental responsibility, as well as its commercialization process of the gold. An example of this was when the mining organization made substantial changes to improve the housing conditions of the workers in the mining camp with the creation of new rest areas and a social space.

MACDESA also stands out for the key role played by women miners within the organization, gathered in the foundation Asociación de Seleccionadoras de Mineral de Cuatro Horas (ASDEMIC). In fact, women’s meticulous work consists in selecting the mineral that still has a gold value from among the debris that the miners remove from the mine. The mining organization values the work of these women and protects them through a series of agreements made to improve their working conditions and the professionalization of their work. With the Fairmined Premium, which contributes up to $ 4,000 USD per kilo of Fairmined Gold sold, MACDESA will continue to support the association. In fact, the organization plans to invest part of the Premium so that the women miners can establish a company which will provide services to the mining organization itself and the community.

Responsible sourcing and transparency in supply chains are increasingly important issues for businesses in the jewellery industry as they have become aware of the risks of poor mining practices and the negative impact this may have on their reputation.

Organizations like the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) and the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) have developed standards and certification systems to help businesses make their supply chains more transparent and responsible.

RJC launched its Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certification in 2012 to support businesses who wish to provide independent assurance to customers and stakeholders that their gold is traceable from responsible sources, which comply with rigorous environmental, labour and ethical standards such as the RJC Code of Practices (COP).

The Fairmined Standard developed by ARM certifies gold and associated precious metals from responsible artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) organizations. The delivery of Fairmined certified gold to the market provides confidence for the sector and contributes to the integration of ASM into the formal economy.

The assurance systems of both RJC’s Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certification and ARM’s Fairmined Standard demand that the various supply chain actors undergo regular third party audits to validate compliance with standard requirements. However, the companies often struggle with the audit burden when they participate in various initiatives, as these audits require a significant investment of time and money.

In response to the industry’s demand for reduction of audit burden, ARM and RJC have decided to harmonize their assurance systems where possible and pilot combined Fairmined and CoC audits. This shall as well contribute to reducing barriers towards more responsible supply chains and facilitating engagement with ASM, without compromising the quality and rigour of the initiatives.

Solution of joint auditing

ARM and RJC invited Swiss-based precious metals refiner Metalor Technologies SA, RJC member since 2006 and Fairmined Supplier since 2014, to participate in the pilot, given that the audits for both initiatives were due around the same time.

UL Responsible Sourcing was the third party certification body that conducted the audit in October 2016 after being trained and provided with harmonized audit material and tools. The outcome of the combined pilot was positive for all the involved parties:

“Metalor Technologies SA is proud to be the very first RJC member and Fairmined Supplier to have successfully achieved the demanding requirements set by RJC and Fairmined Standard”, Stated Jose Camino, Group General Counsel at Metalor.

Camino also pointed out that the joint audit approach enabled Metalor to schedule all the audit activities during one period, reducing audit burden in terms of time and costs, and decreasing disruption to normal business activities. “We strongly support the combined audit approach for consistency and efficiency purposes, and will continue with this approach for future audits”.

UL’s Consumer and Retail Services stated that, although RJC and Fairmined have different processes, operating methods and areas of research, they both pursue a common goal: ensuring ethical development. “In this perspective we might say that RJC and Fairmined complement each other. Efficiencies in the auditing process were realised by conducting one site tour and a single interview session and document review with key departments to cover topics from both standards. For example, the combined audit reduced travel expenses by 50%”.

ARM and RJC appreciate the interest and willingness of the actors involved in the first combined audit pilot, and are pleased with the results of the process. Both organizations will continue to collaborate, identifying further opportunities to harmonize and improve the delivery and efficiency of combined audits, and encourage other companies and auditors who are interested to get in contact and join their efforts towards more ethical, sustainable and efficient mineral supply chains.
